The FIFA Club World Cup in the United States provided a platform for football talents from around the globe to showcase their skills, and one player who caught the eye was Zimbabwean left back Divine Lunga. Representing Mamelodi Sundowns, Lunga played a pivotal role in his team’s campaign, leaving a lasting impression on fans and pundits that analysed proceedings from the United States.
Lunga’s versatility was on full display as he featured in the matchday 1 dream team, showcasing his defensive prowess and attacking flair. His solid defensive displays were matched by his energetic involvement in Sundowns’ attacks down the left-hand channel, highlighting his value to the team.
Despite stiff competition for the left-back position, Lunga’s recent performances under Miguel Cardoso’s guidance suggest he will be a key player to watch in the coming season.
Mamelodi Sundowns exited the competition after playing out a goalless draw with Fluminese. Victory over Ulsan coupled with a defeat to Borussia Dortmund left them with 3 points and needing victory over Fluminese to advance to the last 16. A draw against Fluminese however left them on 4 points as they were unable to progress to the round of 16.
Zimbabwe’s national team coach, Michael Nees, will undoubtedly be thrilled with Lunga’s form, which bodes well for the Warriors’ chances in the Africa Cup of Nations tournament in Morocco this December. With Lunga in top form, Zimbabwe fans have every reason to be excited about their team’s prospects.
Lunga’s journey has been marked by ups and downs, with the top left back at one stage loaned out to Golden Arrows. Resilience however saw him returning to Masandawana and taking the chance given to him with both hands.
Form exhibited at the FIFA Club World Cup was testament to why Masandawana were eager to renew Lunga’s contract which was due to expire. ,
As he looks to the future, one thing is clear: Divine Lunga is a player to watch, and his talents will be eagerly anticipated by fans of both Sundowns and the Zimbabwean national team.
