Few players have demonstrated the resilience similar to that of Junior Makunike. The talented midfielder’s journey has been a rollercoaster ride, that has tested his mettle and resolve with his recent resurgence proving to be impressive.

Makunike’s rise to prominence began at Dynamos, where he made a name for himself in the heart of the Dembare midfield. His impressive performances in 2023 caught the attention of Simba Bhora, who swooped in to sign him at the beginning of 2024. Initially, Makunike played key roles, but his influence waned with Tichaona Chipunza emerging as Tonderayi Ndiraya’s preferred anchorman.

Despite Simba Bhora’s league championship win in 2024, Makunike’s campaign was far from ideal. However, the mass exodus of talent from Simba Bhora to Scotland FC in 2025 presented him with a golden opportunity to reclaim his place in the spotlight. Under the tutelage of coach Joel Luphahla, Makunike has seized this chance with both hands, becoming an integral part of Simba Bhora’s campaign.

With 13 matches played so far this season, Simba Bhora sits in second position and Makunike’s performances have been instrumental in this success. His impressive displays have earned him a spot in the national team which will compete at the COSAFA Cup in Bloemfontein, South Africa next month.

Makunike’s strengths lie in his exceptional stamina, ball control, and fine passing ability. He is a player that opponents fear and pundits eagerly anticipate watching. Consistency has been his hallmark this season, exhibiting great displays on both sides of the ball. His offensive output, technique, athleticism, and intelligence make him a formidable force on the pitch.

Enjoying a new lease of life at Simba Bhora, Makunike will be looking to take his game to higher levels and with age still on his side, he undoubtedly has a bright future ahead of him. If his talent is properly harnessed, Makunike could become a national asset, possibly attracting suitors from outside the country.
