Scottland FC demonstrated remarkable resilience by securing a last-minute equaliser to earn a well-deserved point against Highlanders at Barbourfields Stadium. The match played behind a packed stadium was an exhilarating showcase filled with late drama.
Highlanders took the lead in the 81st minute, courtesy of a well executed free-kick by Andrew Mbeba. His curling effort deceived Nelson Chadya, the Scottland goalkeeper, much to the delight of the home crowd, who erupted in song as their team looked poised for victory.
However, Scottland FC, embodying a never-say-die spirit, clawed their way back into the game in injury time. A pinpoint cross from Gareth Madhake found second-half substitute Mthokozisi Msebe, who headed the ball home, silencing the home supporters and securing a crucial point for the visitors. This dramatic equaliser brought Scottland level on points with Manica Diamonds and Telone, all sitting with 7 points.
Scottland’s head coach, Tonderayi Ndiraya, expressed satisfaction with the outcome. “To come back shows good character. It was a competitive match and a great game of football. For a team new to the league, earning a point here at Barbourfields is an achievement,” Ndiraya remarked, highlighting his team’s resilience and determination.
On the other hand, Highlanders coach Kelvin Kaindu couldn’t hide his disappointment after conceding so late in the game. “I am a bit disappointed. Perhaps our tactics didn’t work to our advantage in the end. We tried to close the game in the last two minutes, but unfortunately, we sat back too much, allowing them to score with a free header,” Kaindu lamented, reflecting on the missed opportunity to dislodge Scottland from their 5th position.
The draw leaves Highlanders with 5 points, while Scottland’s spirited comeback ensures they move fourth on the log standings.
