Marumo Gallants and Zimbabwe Warriors’ first-choice goalkeeper, Washington Arubi, suffered an injury during a Betway Premiership match against Orlando Pirates on Saturday. Arubi, who was pivotal in recent matches for Zimbabwe, had to leave the field after just 13 minutes, making way for Kagiso Mlambo.
Arubi’s recent performances have been a rollercoaster of emotions. While he faced criticism for his role in Zimbabwe’s 2-2 draw with Benin, he redeemed himself as a hero in the 1-1 draw against Nigeria, earning a spot in the Africa Soccer Zone Team of the Week. His remarkable saves in Uyo were instrumental in securing a crucial point for the Warriors, showcasing his maturity in the face of adversity.
The Zimbabwean goal minder had emerged as a doubt for the Warriors in the build up to back to back qualifiers against Benin and Nigeria before being declared fit and named in Michael Nees squad.
It is however back to the medical room for Arubi who will be hoping to make a return as soon as possible. The Warriors’ number 1 will be hopeful for his swift recovery, as his presence in goal is invaluable for Marumo Gallants.
Despite the setback, Arubi and his fellow Zimbabwean teammates, Junior Zindoga and Daniel Msendami, found solace in Marumo Gallants’ 2 nil victory over Orlando Pirates. The win was a significant achievement, especially after Pirates’ impressive performance against Mamelodi Sundowns in their previous league encounter.
Arubi’s injury casts a shadow over his immediate playing prospects, and the Zimbabwean football community will be anxiously awaiting updates on his condition, hoping for a quick return to action for the talented shot-stopper.
