Elvis Chipezeze has etched his name in the annals of the Betway Premiership with a remarkable feat that has left football enthusiasts and analysts buzzing. The Magesi goalkeeper has extended his clean sheet record to an impressive 11 league matches, following a narrow 1-0 victory over Stellenbosch on Saturday. This achievement not only underscores Chipezeze’s exceptional goalkeeping prowess but also cements his status as one of the top goalminders in the league.
Thabang Sibanyoni netted the decisive goal in Magesi’s 1 nil win over Stellenbosch FC on Saturday, securing three crucial points for Magesi and propelling Chipezeze’s clean sheet tally to a league-best 11. This record places him at the pinnacle of the Betway Premiership, outshining even the formidable Mamelodi Sundowns’ goalkeeper Ronwen Williams who has 7 clean sheets in the league. Collectively Sundowns have achieved 11 clean sheets but with shared duties also including Dennis Onyango and Joden February.
If Chipezeze’s cup contributions were to be factored in, his clean sheet count would rise to an extraordinary 13. Notably, his stellar performances in the Carling Black Label Cup earned him three Man of the Match awards, further highlighting his invaluable contribution to his team.
While Chipezeze’s achievements are celebrated, they also spark debate within Zimbabwean football circles. Many argue that the former Chicken Inn goalkeeper is deserving of a call-up to the national team, the Warriors. However, head coach Michael Nees has expressed his confidence in current number one, Washington Arubi, preferring not to create a scenario where two alpha goalkeepers vie for the starting position.
Arubi, who has also been a standout performer with seven clean sheets for Marumo Gallants, is recognized for his experience and leadership. Yet, Chipezeze’s ongoing success and formidable record continue to make a compelling case for his inclusion in future national team squads.
