Zimbabwe’s national soccer team head coach, Michael Nees, on Wednesday named the Warriors squad set to compete in the upcoming World Cup qualifiers against Benin and Nigeria this month. The selection has generated significant buzz, particularly due to the return of seasoned campaigner Knowledge Musona.

Musona’s inclusion marks a welcome comeback after a break from national duties, addressing the widespread calls from fans for his return. His experience and leadership are expected to bolster the team’s efforts as they aim to climb the group standings.

Despite concerns surrounding his fitness, Marvelous Nakamba has also been named in the squad, providing the midfield with strength and tenacity. Similarly, Washington Arubi’s inclusion, despite recent injury reports, suggests the coaching staff’s confidence in his ability to contribute to the team’s defensive solidity.

The squad selection features a blend of seasoned internationals and promising local talents. Notably, Simba Bhora’s center-back, Isheanesu Mauchi, has earned a spot, highlighting his impressive performances on the domestic front. Alongside him, local stars such as Khama Billiat, Godknows Murwira, Emmanuel Jalai, and Martin Mapisa make up the homegrown contingent, offering a balance of youth and experience.

While the core of the team remains largely unchanged from the squad that participated in the Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers, one significant absentee is Teenage Hadebe, who is currently undergoing United States citizenship processing.

Zimbabwe faces a challenging task ahead, as they currently sit at the bottom of the standings with just two points. Their upcoming match against Benin in Durban on the 20th, followed by a crucial encounter with Nigeria on the 25th, presents an opportunity to turn the tide. With Nigeria just one point ahead and Rwanda and South Africa leading the group with seven points each, the Warriors have everything to play for.
